Here is another great special produced for Seattle Children’s and KOMO 4. Many hours were spent gathering the emotional stories, interviews and footage for the Mother’s Day theme. Special thanks to DW Clark, Nick Junke, Nick Pavlovsky, Seattle Children’s and all those involved that helped make this an amazing show!

We recently had the opportunity to shoot an amazingly beautiful location about 90 minutes from Seattle. Alderbrook Resort and Spa, overlooking the Hood Canal in Union, WA, has one of the best views I have yet to discover in my short time up here in the Northwest. With plenty of help from all the amazing staff at Alderbrook (especially Marty and Joel), we were able to pack in quite a lot of shooting into only a day and a half. Here’s a brief recap of the shoot:
Day 1

We had a studio production booked by Victory Studios for their client, Countywide Community Forums. The 60 minute panel discussion will be edited down to a 20 minute discussion that will go on their web page and be available to air at local meetings.
Those participating were Joe Copeland from Crosscut.com; Dow Constantine, County Executive; Bob Ferguson, County Councilmember and Rita Brogan from PRR. The focus of this discussion was on issues of public participation and public trust – how to define it.
Production On The High Seas
I recently finished post production on the Seattle Children’s Hospital: Everyday Heroes 1 hour special produced by Kim and Tim Griffis of Northwest Video Edge. They did a fantastic job of telling the inside stories of the individuals and departments that make Seattle Children’s Hospital such a special place in our community.
The special was hosted by KOMO 4′s Molly Shen who lead viewers through the warm and caring story behind Seattle Children’s Hospital. This was a summer-long shooting project for our videographer Nick Junke. Seemed like everytime I looked, Nick was off to Children’s for another day of filming. Additional shooting was done by Tim Griffiths and Mark Nazarino with Jordan Woodworth as grip. Using the Panasonic AG-HVX200, HD video was captured in 720P on P2 memory cards. Tim and Kim expertly wrote, produced and edited the show in their own studio.

The project came together smoothly as the finished elements were delivered to me for post editing. Everything was very well organized by Tim and Kim which made my job a snap. After their packages were ingested into our system, I assembled them together and added opens and transitional elements to complete the show.
A special thanks goes out to everyone at Seattle Children’s Hospital for helping coordinate and execute a project of such magnitude. Seattle Children’s is a valued partner and KOMO 4 is proud to be aligned with such a well respected organization in our community.

Nintendo of America Holiday SMT
This post was written by Mark Nazarino, KOMO Operations Technical Supervisor:
My day started at 2:30am at KOMO. Nintendo had a big announcement that needed to be shared to all major media outlets before the upcoming holidays. Nintendo was to lower the price of the ever popular Nintendo Wii to $199 and were gearing up to release a couple new games including a new Wii Fit exercise game and a four-player Super Mario. KOMO Productions Services conducted a Satellite Media Tour with Nintendo to transmit the announcement to 15 TV stations across the United States. Stations included were CNBC, WBFF Baltimore, KUSA Denver and Reuters to name a few. President and COO Reggie Fils-Amine of Nintendo America broadcasted out of studio C to make the announcement.
Cesari Direct, a regular client of KPS is back for another large scale production. They are in the business of producing amazing infomercials. More than likely you’ve seen an infomercial that Cesari Direct has produced. Some of their clients include: Juice Man, George Forman Grill, Oxy Clean, Rug Doctor and Sonic Care Toothbrush.
The infomercial promoted front loading picture frames from a company called Brilliant Frame. When Cesari Direct comes in to produce an infomercial, they make full use of our studio space. Studio B became the producers area where progress was monitored outside of the control room. Studio C was transformed into a residential interior to showcase the Brilliant Frame picture frames.
Control room 2 was outfitted with 3 HDCam decks to capture the footage in full 1080i. With the help of an AJA SDI converter box, the crew in video control was able to view the action on HD monitors.
The 2 hosts are nationally recognized in the infomercial world.

Back in 2004, the producers of Grey’s Anatomy approached Fisher Plaza looking for a site to film a scene for the pilot episode of Grey’s Anatomy. There were actually 2 locations they were considering, Fisher Plaza and Harborview Hospital. Both locations had a helipad but we won out because of our vicinity to Elliot Bay and the Space Needle. A location scout took a complete survey of our space before determining this should be the site of their production. After securing permits and legal documents from the City of Seattle and Fisher Plaza, the production crew was assembled. It consisted of their core group from Los Angeles as well as freelancers from Seattle. Fisher Plaza was then transformed into Seattle Grace Hospital. Logos and other graphics were painted onto the helipad to complete the look.
The day before production, the crew arrived at Fisher Plaza to determine logistics and performed test landings of the Airlift Northwest helicopter. Director Peter Horton surveyed the location an blocked out the shots. On the day of filming, a second helicopter based at the Seattle Center parking lot provided air to air shots. Celebrities on set included Chandra Wilson, Ellen Pompeo, Katherine Heigl, Sandra Oh and T.R. Knight. The production photos were taken from the filming of the pilot episode in 2004.
In 2006, they returned to do additional filming for another episode which brought back another crew of over 90 people sandwiched into the Summit Conference Room and the helipad. If you look at the video at about 29 seconds in, you’ll see Khym Clark and I are right up there in the action… Really, we were just standing around observing the chaos. Enjoy this exclusive behind the scenes video montage.
The following photos capture highlights from the initial production for the pilot episode of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy back in 2004. Much work went into the preparation and tight timeframe of the production. We had help from EGIS who had to manually open and close the ventilation vents on the rooftop each time the Airlift Northwest helicopter took off and landed. In addition, EGIS also helped secure power and access to restricted areas of the roof. To this day, tourists and fans of Grey’s Anatomy stop into Fisher Plaza asking if this is the site of Seattle Grace Hospital. Shots of Fisher Plaza can be seen in the open of the show with the Airlift Northwest helicopter flying past the Space Needle towards Fisher Plaza. It was a great experience and opportunity to have the crew from Grey’s Anatomy here!

World reknowned influential speaker and educator Lou Tice recently returned to Fisher Plaza for his latest video production. Lou Tice is the founder of the Pacific Institute which pushes the boundaries of excellence through his teachings and a whole host of videos aimed at making individuals, groups and companies succeed. The production brought in an entire crew from KOMO utilizing Studio B as the green room and Studio C as the production studio. It was a 2 day, multi-camera production with Steve Wilson directing out of Control Room 2. Students from the local Gene Juarez Academy were brought in for this highly educational experience. On the 2nd day of production, a surprize visit from Gene Juarez himself brought excitement and enthusiasm to the students attending his school, giving them an extra boost of encouragement and a chance to meet the founder of the Gene Juarez Salons & Spas.

Pat Cashman HD Production
When Pat Cashman and Kevin Raichl were planning their latest production, they chose Fisher Plaza’s studio for their location for Grover’s Electrical and Plumbing. This was an all day shoot that finished early thanks to good organization and planning. While Kevin Raichl of Visual Thinking Northwest Inc. was filming one scene, Nick Junke was busy lighting the next scene making the move from one location to another a breeze. Efficiency is a key factor in many productions because time is money and every set up takes a substantial amount of time. Pat brought in a group of actors and HD production team. DW facilitated the movement between locations at Fisher Plaza. The production was shot in Studio B and C with additional filminng in Sport Restaurant located on the street level at Fisher Plaza. As seen in the production photos, a number of different scenes were created as well as some green screen footage. A lot of clients choose Fisher Plaza and KOMO Production Services for their productions because of the flexibility of our building and the expertise of our staff. I hope you enjoy the behind-the-scenes look at this production. Also included are a few of the completed spots edited by Visual Thinking Northwest Inc.
