Puget Sound Energy: Rock The Bulb 2011

KOMO Production Services and KUNS-TV worked together with TD Wang Advertising Group in Seattle to create a commercial highlighting the Rock the Bulb program sponsored by Puget Sound Energy. The agency sent scripts and video examples of what they’d like their spot to look like.

After viewing their examples, it was determined that using After Effects was the only way to achieve the look and feel they wanted. Here is the completed spot.

Here is another great special produced for Seattle Children’s and KOMO 4. Many hours were spent gathering the emotional stories, interviews and footage for the Mother’s Day theme. Special thanks to DW Clark, Nick Junke, Nick Pavlovsky, Seattle Children’s and all those involved that helped make this an amazing show!

Alderbrook Resort and Spa – Video Production Diary

Written by Nick Pavlovsky

We recently had the opportunity to shoot an amazingly beautiful location about 90 minutes from Seattle. Alderbrook Resort and Spa, overlooking the Hood Canal in Union, WA, has one of the best views I have yet to discover in my short time up here in the Northwest. With plenty of help from all the amazing staff at Alderbrook (especially Marty and Joel), we were able to pack in quite a lot of shooting into only a day and a half. Here’s a brief recap of the shoot:

Day 1

7:35am: We get on the Seattle to Bremerton Ferry—duration 1 hour (then 30 minutes of driving to the resort) Continue reading ‘Alderbrook Resort and Spa – Video Production Diary’

Broadway at the Paramount 2010-2011 Season Promos

Last week, we shot a donut spot with Kent Phillips at the beautiful and historic Paramount Theatre in downtown Seattle. We scouted the theatre a week before the shoot to determine the best locations for backgrounds. The finished spots will feature the 5 new shows including Billy Elliot, Mary Poppins, Hair, Burn the Floor and Rock of Ages in the 2010-2011 season.

Setting up the first shot in the upper lobby area.

Before Kent showed up, we set up lighting for our second location on the main floor of the auditorium to help move things along.

After Kent arrived, we did the usual mic checks and white balance.

Our extras didn’t show up so you’re looking at our last minute background people to make the shot a bit  livelier. Nick Pavlovsky and Ryan Marth from KPS also helped out as extras in the far background.

Setting up the shot on the lower floor of the main auditorium.

Our good shooters hard at work!

This was our final interior location way up in the upper balcony.

Victory Studios Production at Fisher Plaza

(By Khym Clark)

We had a studio production booked by Victory Studios for their client, Countywide Community Forums.  The 60 minute panel discussion will be edited down to a 20 minute discussion that will go on their web page and be available to air at local meetings.

Those participating were  Joe Copeland from Crosscut.com;  Dow Constantine, County Executive; Bob Ferguson, County Councilmember and Rita Brogan from PRR.  The focus of this discussion was on issues of public participation and public trust – how to define it.

Danielle Condos Shoot in Ballard

We’ve had an amazingly mild winter in Seattle and today is no exception. A crisp sunny morning and not a cloud in the sky! A perfect day to shoot on the rootop of a condo construction project in Ballard. The Danielle Condos are in full contruction and DW Clark produced a spot to help promote sales of it’s units.

The beautiful thing about producing commercials is that we can make things look better than they appear in real life. The commercial opens with a scene of wine pouring into a glass, similating the view you’d get from one of the many balconies in this condo. But to viewers, they’d never know this building was in various states of construction. We even broke our wine glass before we left the Fisher Plaza parking garage. Luckily, the client had another glass with him.

Thanks to our new videographer Nick Pavlovsky, we achieved a stunning shot of the wine glass with the Olympic mountains in the background. Look at our low-tech set up in the photos below.

The commercial was enhanced with additional b-roll from Shilshole Bay Marina, computer generated shots of the condo project and still photos of downtown Ballard.

Farewell Mark Nazarino

Dr. Oz turns the camera on Mark!

After 20 years at KOMO TV, Mark Nazarino clocked out for the last time on Tuesday, November 17th. Mark has been involved with almost every department at KOMO. He’s held positions in Master Control, EFP and KOMO Production Services. His last position was Operations Technical Supervisor overseeing and coordinating complicated studio productions for major clients. As a videographer, he’s worked with small local clients up to corporate level executives and has supported all types of productions at the station. If you click around on this blog, you’ll see many of the projects he’s been involved in. Mark’s great personality and “can-do” attitude will be missed around the station. Staff gathered in the main control room on his last day to share memories and to learn more about Mark’s new endeavors.

Where Is Mark Going?

Mark is moving on to a marketing position with Farmers New World Insurance Company. He’s definitely not selling insurance but will continue with video production and marketing at this world reknowned company. Mark has indicated that we’ll be seeing him around the station in the future renting out studios for future productions. We wish him the best! For a personal tribute and account of some of Mark’s work, visit my blog at The Render Q here.
